Introduction

We hope your visit to Northumbria Gliding Club will be both pleasant and memorable. This booklet is intended to give an introduction to some of the many activities which take place at the club.

Our first priority is SAFETY.

The field is an active airfield and as such aircraft will be taking off and landing. In addition, gliders are often launched using a winch. As a result, there will often be cables running the length of the field, and during a launch these will move fast and climb high. After the launch, the cables will have to be retrieved onto the winch and during this phase of operations the cables will be flying. Owing to the shape of our field, it is not possible to see all the operations from any one place.

For these reasons the club has a specific safety policy.

Club members will be pleased to escort you and to show you all the operations taking place during your visit.

A few guidelines:

  • Please park your car in the designated areas. This is to keep the cars safe from damage by falling cables. Your car insurance may not cover you while on the airfield.
  • Dogs must be on a lead. This is to prevent the dog being injured by a moving cable.
  • If launching is in progress, do not walk in front of a glider. It is always safer to walk round the tail.
  • Before setting out to walk anywhere on the field, take a good look in the air all round to see if any aircraft are near. Gliders do not make much noise as they approach, and they may land anywhere on the field.
  • If you wish to know anything about our operations or if you are in doubt about anything, please ask a club member. The member may not know the answer, but they will know who does!
  • Please read the safety leaflet on the next page.
