  • First Solo for Malcolm Smith

Congratulations to Malcolm Smith who was sent solo last Saturday by instructor Dave Osborne.  Perfect timing for that elusive gliding 'season' which is hopefully just around the corner.

  • Wings Night 2011

The club held it's annual dinner and awards evening before Christmas which proved to be another success, being well attended by members along with their friends and family.

This year we were lucky enough to be joined by Diana King as our guest speaker who gave a very insightful overview of gliding, both from her own experiences and from the perspective of her role as BGA development committee chairman.

John Allan made the traditional club chairman's speech following his first year in the role, congratulating all those receiving awards this year but very much focusing on the importance of club development and encouraging young people in the sport.

  • Duty Rota for October to December 2011

Attached is the duty rota for October to December 2011

  • Squeaky Clean Club

High winds and bad weather prevented members from flying this weekend, however rather than going home everyone pulled together and given the club house and hanger a major clean up.  All un-needed and un-wanted item were let go to make room for the useful items, the hanger doors were washed down and the walls painted.

  • Autumn wave on its way?

    IMG-20110903-00125(1).jpg

We had a good day in wave on Saturday despite the poor weather forecast putting a lot of people off.  I had two flights with a couple of friends which reached 11000' and ~8500', and Colin Sword had another good flight climbing to over 10000' on a spinning exercise with Eddie Stephenson in preparation for his full cat.

With the wave season fast approaching can I ask everyone to think about taking a logger with them when they fly?  The BGA are wanting as many flights as possible to be submitted to the BGA Ladder that go above FL100 so that they can prepare a case for EASA to abandon the mandatory use of transponders above FL100 from 2012 onwards.

  • First solo for Terry Collinson

Congratulations to Terry Collinson who went solo at Portmoak during the club's annual expedition.  Terry used a poor soaring day to his advantage, sticking to circuit work and simulated cable breaks.  Instructor Dave Osborne eventually climbed out and watched Terry fly a textbook circuit followed by a greaser of a landing.  I'm sure all the hassle of towing the Puchacz to Portmoak seems worthwhile now!  Well done Terry.

  • Club Ladder Update

May and June club ladder updates now online... If you don't feature on it - why not?!

  • Midweek course

Last week we organised another course for those approaching solo but unfortunately the weather dictated we could only fly on one of the two days.  All the same, plenty of winch launches took place and good progress was made with all three students.  Thanks to Derek for driving the winch.

As ever, if anybody else is interested, get in touch.

  • Chris Noon solos

    Chris shortly after landing.

Last Wednesday, Colin Tweddle had the pleasure of sending Chris Noon solo in a club Puchacz.  Chris visited the club for a trial flight in May whilst on holiday in the area and enjoyed it so much he made the most of his 28-day membership and subsequently went solo a few weeks later.

Chris had previously flown gliders in Africa and after years of commercial flying it was simply a case of blowing off the cobwebs, but none the less, well done Chris, and we hope to see you back soon.  Enjoy your travels!

  • Summer Courses

Last Monday and Tuesday I ran a course for Dave Barnfather and Terry Collinson who were both approaching solo flights but required some focused, concentrated training to make the final steps towards solo.  The weather cooperated and we had a couple of very successful days with lots of progress made and many winch launches taking place.
